For anyone with kids in Newton Public Schools, we’re familiar with – and sometimes frustrated by – Early Release Days. They affect all of us in one way or another, and despite knowing they’re coming, they always seem to sneak up on me. But recently I learned of a wonderful new offering to lessen the difficulty with childcare and logistics on these random days throughout the year. Introducing Early Release Science Days from Newton Community Education and Wicked Cool for Kids. Parents who need their kids to have a consistent schedule until 3pm on weekdays can now enroll them in these classes that have the added benefit of teaching them Wicked Cool Science.
***Right now the program is in (3) of the elementary schools: Horace Mann, Underwood and Bowen.
Here’s a sampling of classes:
In the November Early Release class (11/2), CSI, you’ll become a forensic scientist and use real crime-solving techniques to find the guilty party in an intriguing whodunit. You’ll analyze the evidence—fingerprints, handwriting, hair, and mysterious substances—to find out who stole the cookies for the school fundraiser!
In the December Early Release class (12/7), Egg Crash Cars, you’ll use engineering skills to design a race car that is sleek, fast, and safe enough to transport a very important passenger… an egg! Will your car be safe enough to prevent a crash?
Thanks to Newton Community Ed, the schools, their PTOs, and Wicked Cool for Kids for helping to fill this important gap!
